Iraq. Basrah. Open air shop sells furniture. On a rope are tied carpets with drawings of religious figures: the ayatollah Mohammed Baqer el-Hakim (killed in a car bomb attack in Najaf on august 29 2003 ), Imam Ali and Imam Hussein. Imam Hussein is an important figure in Islam. He is exalted by all the Shia as a martyr who fought tyranny. Imam Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was the first male to convert to Islam. Basra ( in arabic Al Basrah) is the capital of Basra Governorate in southern Iraq. 01.03.04 © 2004 Didier Ruef
